Types of Resume

Depending on how your career has developed, you can choose one of the two most common types of resumes - chronological or functional.

Chronological Summary

A chronological resume is a list of jobs with a list of professional duties, which is presented in reverse chronological order - from the present to the past. This type of resume is most suitable for demonstrating professional advancement in a certain field, career growth in one company. The main difference in the structure of this resume is that the organizations in which the work experience is obtained are arranged in a sequential order (the last place of work is indicated first) and each item is accompanied by a brief description of the main duties you perform.

It is recommended to use the chronological type of resume if you have already gained significant work experience, if you can see career growth in a certain professional field, your line of business has not changed or has changed rarely, job changes have occurred infrequently, you do not plan to change the field of professional activity.

The main advantage of the chronological resume is its simplicity and ease of reading and perception. The disadvantage is that in the chronological order of presentation, all the jumps or interruptions in your career (if any) are strongly evident. In addition, this type of resume does not work well for you if you change the field of professional interests, since it does not allow you to emphasize the skills and knowledge that you have accumulated that can be used in another field.

Functional Resume

A functional resume focuses on professional skills and accomplishments. This format allows you to focus the attention of the employer not on where you worked and what positions you occupied, but on what you did. Information on companies and positions is outlined quite briefly. The structure of the functional resume is as follows: responsibilities, achievements and professional qualities are divided into categories - sales, personnel management, planning, etc. Each category is accompanied by a description of the duties and your achievements. At the end is a chronological list of places of work.

It is recommended that you use the functional type of resume if you have decided to change your professional activity, are looking for work after a long break, often changed your place of work or direction, do not have work experience or it is insignificant. The main advantage of this type of resume is that it allows you to focus on the most interesting and important moments of your career, on your skills, and not on the place and time of their acquisition. In order to create a functional type resume, it is important to rethink your professional experience and outline it in a structured way. Since the emphasis in such a resume is on the skills and abilities of the applicant, you need to clearly imagine the position that you want to apply for and choose from your experience only what will be important for the fulfillment of your future duties.

Of course, the division of resumes into types is conditional, and you can optionally develop your own format or use a mixed type that combines elements of a chronological and functional resume.
